Europe offers a growing choice of used electric cars. Tesla, BMW, Volvo, BYD and many other brands can offer attractive price differences, but the battery and charging system add specific checks.
Identify the version and battery
Check the exact model, battery capacity where confirmed, power, drivetrain and software or hardware version where it materially affects the vehicle's equipment.
Assess battery condition
Request available information on battery health, observed range and charging history where this data exists. A diagnostic or specific check may be appropriate depending on the vehicle's value. Do not infer battery condition from mileage alone.
Verify charging
Check supplied cables, connectors, AC/DC charging and operation of the charging flap and port. Missing accessories may involve additional cost.
Battery and vehicle warranty
Read an advertised warranty carefully: remaining term, mileage limit, covered components and usage conditions. Do not assume a manufacturer's or commercial warranty is transferable without checking.
History, tyres and brakes
An electric car needs fewer traditional mechanical operations, but the condition of tyres, suspension, brakes, bodywork, electronics and equipment remains essential. The history must also allow mileage to be checked.
Documents and registration
Foreign sale and registration documents must be checked before purchase. See our guide to documents to request from the seller, then our articles on the French tax clearance certificate (quitus fiscal) and the registration certificate.
Compare the overall budget
Transport, checks and procedures must be included in the comparison. Find our approach in calculating the total budget before purchase.
