A car advertised for less abroad may become less attractive once transported and registered in France. To make a decision, compare its complete landed cost, taking its equipment and condition into account, with the cost of a genuinely comparable car in France.
FL IMPORT AUTO searches for the vehicle, arranges checks and coordinates the import according to the agreed scope of service. The budget must be itemised before you commit: each item is priced, identified as an estimate or left to be confirmed.
What is the total cost of an imported car?
The calculation includes the price actually payable to the seller, the selected checks, transport, necessary documents or conformity procedures, applicable taxes, registration, brokerage fees and any identified work needed immediately.
An unknown cost is not zero. A subtotal can help assess a project, but it does not establish a final price or guaranteed savings.
| Item | What to check | Supporting evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle | Exact version, payable price, VAT treatment | Seller’s written offer or draft invoice |
| Checks | Documents received and inspection actually planned | Scope of checks and quote where applicable |
| Transport | Departure point, destination, included services | Transport provider’s quote |
| Documents and conformity | Available documents and outstanding procedures | Vehicle technical file |
| Taxes | Any VAT, CO₂ malus and other applicable taxes | Dated calculation for this vehicle |
| Registration | Registration certificate taxes and fees | Official calculation suited to the case |
| Brokerage | Agreed service and applicable fees | FL IMPORT AUTO quote and contract |
| Immediate maintenance | Tyres, servicing or identified repairs | Condition report and written estimate |
Avoid double counting: if a registration calculation already includes a tax, do not add it to the total again.
Vehicle price, brokerage fees and deposit: what is the difference?
The vehicle price pays for its sale. Brokerage fees pay for the service agreed with FL IMPORT AUTO. Third-party costs include transport and the services ordered.
A deposit is a partial payment towards an obligation specified in the contract. It is not an additional expense to add to the corresponding price a second time. Before paying, check the recipient, the purpose of the payment, the commitment terms and the cancellation terms stated in the file.
See our fees and have the fee scale applicable to your project confirmed.
How should the CO₂ malus be included?
An imported used car may be subject to the malus tax when first registered in France. The calculation depends on the vehicle and applicable rules, including the provisions relating to its age. Buying a used or hybrid vehicle does not, by itself, mean the tax is zero. Service Public: CO₂ malus.
FL IMPORT AUTO arranges for applicable taxes to be calculated and identifies them in the quote. Where the relevant procedures fall within the agreed service, FL IMPORT AUTO coordinates them. Taxes remain payable by the customer; they are not offered free of charge. The weight-based malus must also be assessed where applicable.
EU and non-EU imports: different documentation
For a vehicle purchased in another European Union country, the French tax clearance certificate, or quitus fiscal, confirms its VAT position. It does not replace a roadworthiness test or proof of conformity. VAT may be due depending on the case: the invoice and the vehicle’s tax status must be checked. French tax authority: tax clearance certificate.
For a vehicle from outside the EU, customs procedures and conformity documents differ. Service Public specifies, among other documents, the 846 A customs clearance certificate unless an exemption applies, together with technical evidence appropriate to the case. Their availability must be established before the budget is finalised. Service Public: registering a used vehicle.
How do you compare with the French market?
Compare the same generation and powertrain with an equivalent trim, similar year, mileage, equipment and condition. A warranty advertised without a verified contract must not be valued as confirmed cover.
Record several active French listings and date the comparison. These are asking prices, not completed sales. Keep the references in the file and explain any remaining differences. Confidential sourcing information must not be made public.
If the complete cost offers no advantage over a comparable French offer, it is better to reconsider the specification or the market searched.
What information should you provide to get started?
State the model or intended use, your maximum total budget, timing, essential equipment and contact details. A listing link helps if you have already found a car, but is not required for an initial assessment.
