Documents are among the most important aspects of buying a car in Europe. Before any payment, the file must clearly identify the seller and vehicle, then allow export and French registration to be prepared.
1. Vehicle identification documents
Request available foreign registration documents and check that the information is consistent: make, model, VIN, first registration date and registered keeper. Document formats vary by country.
2. The invoice or sales contract
The sales document must identify the parties and the vehicle. For a professional seller, company details must match the contact details used during the transaction. Tax statements must be checked according to the vehicle's and seller's situation.
3. Maintenance records
The service book, invoices, reports and available histories are not just for assessing mechanical condition: they also help cross-check the mileage and vehicle timeline.
4. Conformity documents
Depending on the vehicle and its origin, conformity information may be needed to prepare registration. Identify it before the transaction to avoid discovering an incomplete file after purchase.
5. Available checks or inspections
Roadworthiness test or local inspection documents may provide useful mileage and condition information. Their format depends on the country of origin.
6. Prepare the French documentation
After purchase, other supporting documents are needed for the French procedures. See our guides to the French tax clearance certificate (quitus fiscal) and the registration certificate for an imported vehicle.
Never separate documents from vehicle checks
A correct document alone does not guarantee mechanical condition. Conversely, a vehicle that looks immaculate in photos may cause problems if its documentation is incomplete. Both assessments must be carried out together.

Minimum documentation to gather before committing
| Category | Items to check |
|---|---|
| Seller | Identity or company name, address, contact details and, for a business, consistent billing information. |
| Vehicle | VIN, make, model, first registration, mileage and foreign registration where applicable. |
| Transaction | Invoice or sales contract, price, parties to the transaction and payment beneficiary. |
| History | Available service book, invoices, maintenance, checks and reports to cross-check the timeline. |
| Conformity | Certificate of conformity or equivalent document where required by the case or registration. |
| Condition | Recent photos, video if needed and any inspection report. |
What the French authorities require next
For a vehicle purchased in the European Union, the DGFiP states that the tax clearance application relies in particular on the invoice or transfer certificate and the foreign registration certificate if the vehicle has already been registered. France Titres also lists, depending on the case, proof of sale, the foreign registration document, proof of conformity and tax clearance among the documents useful for first registration in France.

Three discrepancies not to dismiss
- the VIN or registration does not match between the invoice and foreign document;
- the payment beneficiary is not the contracting party without clear justification;
- the advertised mileage does not match available maintenance or inspection documents.
