Plug-in hybrid cars are widely available across European markets: Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Ford, Volkswagen and Toyota offer many PHEV models. Importing them requires some specific checks in addition to the usual checks for a used vehicle.
Identify the exact hybrid system
Check the engine, power, battery capacity where documented, drivetrain and vehicle generation. Two versions with similar names may have different performance and equipment.
Check charging
Ask whether cables are supplied, which charging types are compatible and whether the system works correctly. A charging demonstration or further information may be requested where the documentation allows.
Examine the maintenance history
A PHEV combines a combustion engine and an electric system. Maintenance of the engine, brakes, tyres and hybrid system must be assessed. Invoices and mileage records remain essential to reconstruct previous use.
Assess the battery carefully
Age and mileage alone cannot determine a battery's condition. Available vehicle information, any diagnostics and its charging behaviour must be considered. Avoid range promises that have not been confirmed for the specific vehicle.
Check PHEV-related equipment
Driving modes, preheating, connected apps, energy recovery and dedicated displays must be checked where included in the specification.
Calculate the import budget
The overall cost includes purchase price, transport, checks, procedures and registration-related fees. See our guide to calculating the total import budget.
For the procedures, also see our articles on the French tax clearance certificate (quitus fiscal) and the registration certificate.
